FOKKER “ALASKAN” AIRPLANE

The "Alaskan"waspurchased by Sir Hubert Wilkins for use in the Detroit News Expedition to fly  from Point Barrow, Alaska to Spitzbergen, Norway.  That flight was accomplished with a Lockheed Vega, but the :Alaskan"  was flown by Eielson for some time  in preparation for that mission.  The  "Alaskan" was later presented by Sir Wilkins to Carl "Ben"  Eielson's father, Ole Eielson, after Ben's fatal crash in 1930.  See "Ben's Bio" page.  The Alaskan was on display by the North Dakota Historical Assn. for some years, before being returned to Ben's home town of Hatton, North Dakota, where it currently resides in its own building, the Eielson Hangar.

This building was purchased and remodeled by the Hatton-Eielson Museum Assn. specifically for this purpose.  The plane,  and its Liberty engine are on display every Sunday afternoon from Memorial Day to Labor Day and at other times by appointment.  See "About Us" page for tour details.
