HISTORY OF ASSOCIATION On June 29, 1973 a group of people interested in establishing an area museum in Hatton, N.D. met; Guy Thorson presided as Chairman. It was decided to honor Hatton's famous son, Carl Ben Eielson by naming the museum after him and a Certificate of incorporation was obtained. 1974 was the Charter Year and the Association obtained the Anders Ness house, which had been vacant for 17 years. The task was taken to prepare it for a Grand Opening Dedication, July 4th, 1976, as Hatton's Bicentennial Project. Almost 5 years later, on June 16, 1981, the Association reached a goal when, with loans from Hatton Enterprises and the Farmers and Merchants National Bank, they were able to purchase the Osking-Eielson house. Within a few months it was established as the permanent Hatton Museum and the Ness house was sold and became a family dwelling once again. Both houses are listed in the National Register of Historic Sites. Much restoration was necessary in the first Museum and in the Eielson house a new split-cedar shingle roof was added in 1982. The exterior was painted and repaired in 1983 and several more times since then. In 2004 the linoleum was stripped from the kitchen floor and the maple floor underneath was refinished to its original beauty. Most rooms have been repainted or re-papered. A modern heating and air conditioning system were added in 2002.
